Lam Ka-sing, a senior reporter at the South China Morning Post, was recognised as the Business Reporter of the Year at the 7th Business Journalism Awards by the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK).

Lam, who joined the Post full time in 2018, received the top honour from the university’s School of Communication, in an annual award competition that attracted more than 300 entries in nine award categories in text, video and audio journalism.

The panel of judges comprised 60 professionals from different fields, selecting the winning entries based on news value and impact, originality and exclusivity, reportorial quality, storytelling and writing skills.

Hong Kong’s youth should consider pursuing careers in journalism, due to promising job prospects in the industry, said Deputy Financial Secretary Michael Wong Wai-lun, the guest of honour at the awards.

“A good business report should not only present factual information, but also offer analytical perspectives for readers,” Wong said, adding that the government’s Information Services Department should streamline its reporting by delivering “one message at a time, instead of overwhelming readers with excessive content”.

News organisations will not be replaced by technology or the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), since commentators on social media still rely on a large volume of news content from these traditional outlets, highlighting the importance of the quality and reliability of news content, Wong said.

Lam, who specialises in news and analysis about the real estate industry, also won silver in the Best Property Market Reporting (Text) category for his feature story about how Hong Kong’s retail landlords are luring restaurants to fill their vacant space.

Wong Oi Kam of the Hong Kong Economic Journal won gold in Best Property Market News Reporting category for her story on mortgage boycotts in mainland China. She also won the top award in Best Economic & Financing Policy News Reporting with her piece on major risks brought by China’s slowing economic growth.

Iris Ouyang, the Post’s Shenzhen-based reporter, won silver in Best Technology News Reporting (Text) for her March 2022 feature about how many of the world’s largest luxury brands are staking territories in the metaverse, and striking gold with their forays.

TVB’s Yuen Yuen Yuk won gold in Best Business Reporting (Video and Audio) with her story that compared the night economies of Hong Kong and mainland China.

iMoney Magazine’s Chan Wing Yin received the gold award in Best Business & Finance Profile Interview, China Daily Hong Kong’s Chai Hua won the Best Greater Bay Area Business News Reporting with her story on Qianhai’s development and unique role in the Greater Bay Area.

Wong encouraged journalists to take part in the HSUHK’s annual awards, using the Miss Hong Kong beauty pageant for comparison.

The value of participating lies not in winning, as even the top three contestants at the Miss Hong Kong pageant may not necessarily have a bright future, he said. Rather, the most important aspect is the experience of participating.

The previous Business Reporter of the Year award winner was Lee Yun-yan of the Hong Kong Economic Journal Monthly, who also won gold in the Best Business Technology News Reporting category with a story about the utopian aspirations of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

The Post picked up gold and silver in the Best Business News Reporting category during the 6th Awards a year ago. Deputy Business Editor Peggy Sito won gold for her December 2021 feature story about a significant reform in China’s national pricing scheme for pharmaceuticals. Senior correspondents Chad Bray, Georgina Lee and Enoch Yiu won silver with their November 2021 feature about the progress in Hong Kong’s fintech that is helping the city catch up with neighbours in the Greater Bay Area.
