British regulators have signed off on the design for the first Chinese-designed nuclear reactor proposed to be built in the United Kingdom after a nearly five-year regulatory process.
The UK’s Office for Nuclear Regulation and the Environment Agency approved the design of the UKHRP1000 nuclear power for use in Britain, the regulators said in a statement on Monday. The reactor is based on the Hualong One power plant, designed by China General Nuclear Group (CGN).
The regulators said they “are satisfied that this reactor meets regulatory expectations on safety, security and environmental protection at this stage of the regulatory process”.

However, the Bradwell B nuclear power station, which would provide power to about four million homes, has faced controversy in recent years.
CGN and French utility EDF first proposed to build the reactor in Essex in southeast England in 2017, but acceptance of China’s involvement in the nation’s nuclear industry has waned as relations have soured between the nations over Hong Kong, the treatment of ethnic minorities in China’s Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region and other issues in recent years.

Last year, the UK government introduced a new funding programme designed to attract private investors in Britain and elsewhere to invest in nuclear projects in Britain and discourage Chinese investment in those projects.
