Li Auto, one of Tesla’s major rivals in mainland China, has set its sights on the Middle East and Asia-Pacific, with its premium intelligent models poised to take on petrol car brands such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
3. China’s CATL touts landmark energy-storage order for sodium-ion batteries
The world’s largest EV and energy-storage system (ESS) battery maker announced on April 27 that it would deliver 60 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of sodium-ion batteries to Beijing HyperStrong Technology over three years in a landmark deal for the new battery technology.
4. Xpeng sets August goal to overtake Tesla’s self-driving tech in China

Xpeng, the Chinese EV start-up often cast as a key rival to Tesla, has set an ambitious goal to surpass the US carmaker’s self-driving capabilities in China by August, according to co-founder, chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng.
5. China’s low-cost EVs to be fitted with lidar systems, usually saved for lux cars
China’s EV makers could introduce a lidar sensor-based intelligent driving system in models priced as low as 60,000 yuan (US$8,795) this year, reflecting intensifying competition and falling costs, according to AI-driven tech firm Robosense.
6. BYD, China’s EV king, posts a 55% slump in first-quarter profit
The mainland’s largest and most profitable EV maker reported a net profit of nearly 4.09 billion yuan (US$590 million) for the first three months of the year, a drop of 55 per cent compared with a year earlier.
