Yelp launches Hong Kong service
Yelp, the San Francisco-based online review company, launched its service earlier on Thursday in Hong Kong’s crowded social-media market.

Yelp, the San Francisco-based online review company, entered its 29th major location worldwide, with the launch of its service earlier on Thursday in Hong Kong’s crowded social-media market.
Miriam Warren, the vice-president for new markets at Yelp, said the company’s goal is to “connect more people, whether you live here or visiting the city, to great local businesses”.
But in a market saturated with online guides for dining, shopping and entertainment, as well as various social-media platforms, the 10-year-old company needs to offer significantly more relevant content than the competition.
“One of the big differentiators for Yelp is that it is in 28 other markets and provides about 61 million reviews. We cover so much more than just restaurants, food and nightlife,” Warren said.
Having mobile access and language-translation support to all its content is also a big help for Hong Kong travellers
“So while it’s very good to have guides that gives you sexy places to eat, drink and dance, the reality is that you’re going to need to dry-clean your clothes, get a nice cup of coffee, or even help a friend get orthopaedic surgery at some point.”
