Editorial | Lessons to be learned from Jumbo tragedy
- Many questions remain unanswered following the sinking of Hong Kong’s iconic floating restaurant, leading to a barrage of conspiracy theories

There needs to be greater transparency and accountability so that lessons can be learned. When the loss-making tourist attraction – further battered by coronavirus-induced restrictions – left for an undisclosed destination following its closure, few would have thought it would literally end up at the bottom of the sea.
But like many other businesses, it became a burden to the owner as the pandemic took a heavy toll on tourism and dining industries over the past two years. This was not helped when a half-hearted venture to keep it afloat, with the help of nearby Ocean Park, fell flat.
Many have questioned, in hindsight, whether the decades-old restaurant could have survived a long voyage. The secrecy surrounding the journey fuelled conspiracy theories.
