Google is a great company, but in Hong Kong they employ a PR company that specialises in gobbledygook. A colleague, senior journalist Niall Fraser, emailed Hoffman PR with a simple question: "Can you just answer one simple question for me? Has Google Inc ever been sued for (a specific legal infringement we do not want to alert our competitors about) in the Hong Kong courts before, or is this the first time?" The answer could have been yes or no. Here is the reply, which should win an award for evasion: "Hi Niall, Thanks for your continuous interest in Google. We do very much like to help but unfortunately we really have no such information on hand. Sorry that we are unable to help this time but please do let us know if we could be of any assistance in the future. Thanks." Niall is chasing a major story. A PR company worth its salt would offer to find out and get back to him. Little wonder PR people get so little respect from hard-working journalists.
