SEVERAL CPPCC members have urged government officials to end corrupt lifestyles and spearhead the development of cultural and socialist ethics.
Members were yesterday discussing ways to strengthen spiritual civilisation up to 2010.
'The neglect of developing culture and socialist ethics can no longer be tolerated,' one member said.
China must never seek short-term economic development at the cost of culture and ideological progress, the member added.
Another member, Qian Zhenying said that it was important to build up the country in economic, cultural and ideological areas simultaneously, as this could contribute to the country's long-term stability.
'Leading officials at various levels can help accelerate the development of culture and ideology if they attend fewer luxurious dinners, buy fewer deluxe cars and build fewer hotels,' she said, for the subcommitte on society and law.
