Internet users poked fun at the phallic design until censors spoiled the fun by blocking searches for the building on Weibo - but not before pictures were widely shared.

 

The Beijing-loyalist newspaper thought it had its scoop of the year with the news that President Xi Jinping had taken a taxi through downtown Beijing with a single security aide. However, faces at the paper were as red as its politics when Xinhua said that no such journey took place.

 

The Canadian teen-pop irritant continued his descent into self-parody with a misjudged tribute to Anne Frank. Bieber was pilloried for writing in the guest book at the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam that he hoped Anne "would have been a Belieber" - a member of his army of youthful fans.
