Once the post-election celebrations had subsided, Australia's new prime minister wasted little time getting down to business of running the country and deciding how to reduce the number of asylum seekers. The Liberal leader, who enjoyed a crushing victory over the governing Labor Party, will likely be heading for Indonesia on his first overseas visit for bilateral talks on the controversial policy of turning around asylum-seeker boats. That issue, the problems facing the economy and whether to keep a tax on carbon emissions will occupy Abbott during his "honeymoon" period.

It was lucky 13 for the Spanish tennis ace as he completed an amazing comeback from injury to land the US Open title, beating world No1 Novak Djokovic over four sets in an epic final. By landing his 13th grand slam title, 27-year-old Nadal is now four behind the record held by Roger Federer and one shy of Pete Sampras' 14. The fact that Nadal watched last year's US final from his home in Majorca as he nursed a serious knee injury, and only returned to action in February, makes this feat all the more remarkable.
