With levels of mutual animosity having run deep, it is best that US President Barack Obama and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani did not rush impulsively into each other's arms in a show of false camaraderie and goodwill…
While the US needs to scale down its over-the-top rhetoric and threats, replacing it with a gentler, sensible approach, it is Rouhani who must be able to stick his neck out and make a commitment of sorts, or at least provide assurances, towards scaling down Iran's nuclear designs.
Rouhani's friendly overtures do not negate the fact that he faces the additional pressure of ensuring that he does not stray too far off from Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's revolutionist ideals.

US-Iranian confrontation has exerted a negative influence on a whole generation in both nations. Thus, even if the state heads find common interests of reconciliation and are determined to put ahead the process, there will be enormous twists and turns in their diplomatic efforts. It is nearly impossible that the US and Iran will become friends in the foreseeable future due to a series of problems including ideological differences and the latter's conflict with Israel. China will be happy to see their ties improved. Despite the fact that Iran has restrained US power to a certain degree, its nuclear issue and the risk of war with the US have sabotaged China's interests.

Obama is right that "the diplomatic path must be tested". But is the President's optimism justified? … Iran has steadily built its capacity to enrich uranium through a decade of negotiations and escalating sanctions. Rouhani, a long-time and fiercely loyal follower of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has yet to offer any indication of what, if any, deviations the regime may be prepared to make from its previous refusal to limit that activity … or answer UN inspectors' questions about suspected work on warheads … During his election campaign this year, Rouhani boasted that, as the regime's nuclear negotiator a decade ago, he had managed to head off sanctions even as the programme moved forward.
