Hollywood stars arrive for Tokyo festival
Hollywood glitz comes to the Tokyo Film Festival as Tom Hanks, Robert de Niro and Francis Ford Coppola - with his daughter Sofia Ford Coppola - arrive for one of Asia's largest movie celebrations. A US$50,000 top prize is up for grabs, with movies from around the world competing. The nine-day event begins today with the screening of Hong Kong horror flick Rigor Mortis, directed by Juno Mak, in the Asian Future category.
 
Leung faces tough questions in Legco
Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying will attend at a potentially fiery question and answer session in the Legislative Council today. He is expected to be grilled by lawmakers on his handling of the Manila hostage tragedy and free-TV licences. Meanwhile, Ricky Wong Wai-kay, whose Hong Kong Television Network was not granted a free-TV licence by the government, will appear on radio in the morning before giving a lecture on free TV at Chinese University.
 
Aquino and Park to discuss defence issues
A new memorandum of understanding on defence is expected to be signed and regional issues such as territorial claims discussed during Philippine President Benigno Aquino's two-day state visit to South Korea. Aquino, who visited the earthquake-hit areas of Bohol and Cebu this week, is the first leader to undertake a state visit to South Korea since President Park Geun-hye took office in February.
 
Sars expert to give Chinese University talk
Mainland respiratory diseases expert Zhong Nanshan will deliver a lecture on "From Sars to H7N9 - Management of Acute Respiratory Virus Infection in China" at Chinese University today. Zhong is renowned for leading the fight against severe acute respiratory syndrome in 2003. Zhang will also be conferred with an honorary Doctor of Science degree.
 
Els heads impressive field at Macau Open
Four-time Major champion Ernie Els of South Africa will make his debut in the US$800,000 Macau Open golf tournament as it continues to attract many of the world's top players. The four-day event at the Macau Golf and Country Club will boast its strongest ever Asian Tour field, with six Order of Merit champions and 40 other tour winners including former Asian Tour No1 Liang Wenchong of China.
 
Annual UN event addresses world poverty
The annual commemoration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty will be held today at United Nations headquarters in New York, focusing on the theme "Working together towards a world without discrimination: building on the experience and knowledge of people in extreme poverty". This year's event involves the International Movement ATD Fourth World, supported by the missions of France and Burkina Faso to the United Nations.
