Sandy Hook school tragedy remembered A year ago today a gunman went on the rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the US, killing 20 children and six adults. Respecting the wishes of the victims' families and officials in Newtown, Connecticut, much of the national media has agreed not to report from the town. State investigators say the gunman, Adam Lanza, who turned the gun on himself after the shootings, acted alone. He used guns legally purchased by his mother, whom he shot dead before driving to the school. His motive for targeting Sandy Hook remain a mystery. Deadline for Merkel coalition deal Germany's centre-left Social Democrats will be announcing the result of a ballot of their 470,000-strong membership on a deal to form a new government with Chancellor Angela Merkel. It is the last major hurdle to Merkel embarking on a third term. Merkel's Christian Democrats emerged the strongest force from September elections but fell short of a majority, and their previous, pro-business coalition partners were voted out of parliament. Mubarak heads back to court Egypt's toppled president Hosni Mubarak is expected back in court for another hearing in his trial on charges of complicity in the deaths of protesters in 2011.
