2013 retail sales figures to be announced The Hong Kong government will unveil retail sales figures for December, as well as the figures for 2013 as a whole. The value of total retail sales rose 8.5 per cent in November, a rise from 6.3 per cent for October. Sales rose 11.6 per cent by value in the first 11 months of the year. The government has attributed the increase to positive consumer sentiment and further expansion of inbound tourism, largely from the mainland. The Retail Management Association will comment on the figures later today. Court verdict in assault on Nina Wang nephew The district court will deliver its verdict in a case involving an assault on Kung Ho, the nephew of the late billionaire businesswoman Nina Wang Kung Yu-sum. The 36-year-old was attacked by four people in the basement car park at the Tsuen Wan headquarters of the Chinachem group in June last year. World Cancer Day tackles myths of the disease Today is World Cancer Day, which is aimed at raising awareness of cancer and encouraging its prevention, detection, and treatment. The event is led by the International Union Against Cancer (UICC), a global consortium of more than 350 cancer-fighting organisations in more than 100 countries. Policymakers and UICC member organisations are encouraged to make cancer a political priority. The focus this year is the need to reduce stigmas surrounding the disease and dispelling myths, such as that people cannot do anything about cancer. Facebook celebrates its 10th birthday The social network site Facebook is 10 years old today. It was founded in February 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg with college roommates and fellow Harvard University students Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. It was launched primarily for the US market, but went global in 2005. An estimated 1.23 billion users worldwide now use the site every month. Facebook listed in May 2012, and the firm is estimated to be worth over US$134 billion. It's considered to be the fifth most successful startup company of all time by market capitalisation, revenue and growth. Tendulkar receives top Indian award Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar is awarded the Bharat Ratna, his country's highest civilian award. He will receive the award from the Indian president, Pranab Mukherjee, at his official residence in New Delhi. Tendulkar is considered to be the greatest cricketer of the modern generation. He represented Mumbai domestically and India internationally for close to 24 years. He is the only player to have scored 100 international centuries, the first batsman to score a double century in a one-day international and the only player to score more than 30,000 runs in international cricket.
