Singapore hosts TPP negotiations The latest round of ministerial talks on the formation of a 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership starts in Singapore. The United States had hoped to wrap up the free-trade negotiations last year, but differences with Japan over agriculture and cars hindered a conclusion. The partnership would create a free-trade pact spanning much of the Pacific Rim. The US and Japan are the biggest economies represented. China was not invited to take part. Pope Francis appoints new cardinals The pope formally appoints 19 new cardinals at a Vatican ceremony known as a consistory. Among the newly appointed cardinals is the Archbishop of Seoul, Andrew Yeom Soo-jung, Philippine Archbishop Orlando Quevedo and several churchmen from Africa, including Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso. Observers say the move reflects the pope's drive to put the poor at the heart of his mission. Hong Kong, Barcelona focus on regeneration Representatives from Hong Kong and Barcelona hold an exchange on waterfront regeneration in a symposium at the University of Hong Kong. Development Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po will be the guest of honour. The symposium comes as Hong Kong considers how best to open up and develop the harbourfront on Hong Kong Island. Commentators form free speech association Members of the Independent Commentators Association hold an inauguration ceremony. The group includes journalists Ching Cheong, Li Wei-ling, Willy Wo-lap Lam and Johnny Lau Yui-siu, and former government minister Joseph Wong Wing-ping. It has been set up amid concern over the state of press freedom in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Journalists Association is holding a rally on this issue at the government complex tomorrow. PlayStation 4 goes on sale in Japan Sony launches its new game console, the PlayStation 4, in Japan. The move comes three months after the product's November debut in US and European markets. Sony said the delay for Japan was to make sure that software tailored to the region was ready in time. The product will sell for 39,980 yen in Japan, or just over HK$3,000. Boxing takes centre stage in Macau The much anticipated Ring of Gold bout takes place in Macau. The big fight of the night will pit Miguel Vazquez against Denis Shafikov of Russia for the International Boxing Federation lightweight world title. China's Zou Shiming will take on Thailand's Yokthong Kokietgym in a flyweight bout, while Hong Kong's Rex Tso Sing-yu will meet Japan's Mako Matsuyama for the World Boxing Council's Asian super flyweight title. Macau's Ng Kuok-kun will also be in action in a super welterweight bout.
