Some live chicken retailers will suspend sales in protest at soaring wholesale prices. It is unclear how many of the 130 retailers will take part in the action, which was urged by a trade association. It is angry that wholesale prices have doubled, apparently because there is little competition after the supply of mainland chickens was suspended following a bird-flu scare. Some owners of trucks which are used to transport live chickens are also joining the action.
A concern group is petitioning the Legislative Council to urge the government to introduce 15 years of free education. The call is being made after a kindergarten in Tin Shui Wai was forced from its premises because a rival school made a higher bid for the site. Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying has pledged to introduce 15 years of free education, but has so far only set up a committee to look into free kindergarten places.
