Chicken vendors suspend sales
Some live chicken retailers will suspend sales in protest at soaring wholesale prices. It is unclear how many of the 130 retailers will take part in the action, which was urged by a trade association. It is angry that wholesale prices have doubled, apparently because there is little competition after the supply of mainland chickens was suspended following a bird-flu scare. Some owners of trucks which are used to transport live chickens are also joining the action.
 
Group petitions over free education
A concern group is petitioning the Legislative Council to urge the government to introduce 15 years of free education. The call is being made after a kindergarten in Tin Shui Wai was forced from its premises because a rival school made a higher bid for the site. Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying has pledged to introduce 15 years of free education, but has so far only set up a committee to look into free kindergarten places.
 
Hearing on Ma Sik-chun arrest warrant
High Court judge Andrew Chan Hing-wai hears an application to revoke the arrest warrant for Oriental Daily News co-founder Ma Sik-chun. Ma was charged in 1977 with conspiracy to traffic morphine and opium. He skipped bail and fled to Taiwan one year later. He was publisher of the newspaper at the time. Ma has been living in Taiwan since he fled. He has been trying to find out whether he can return here without facing arrest.
 
Trial of radical cleric Abu Hamza opens
The trial begins in New York of British radical cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri. He faces charges of supporting al-Qaeda, the kidnapping of 16 hostages in Yemen and plotting to open a training camp for militants in the United States. He was jailed in Britain in 2004 and deported to the United States in October 2012 following a series of lengthy appeals. The cleric denies all the charges made against him.
 
Justin Bieber assault pretrial opens
A pretrial hearing opens in Toronto into allegations that pop star Justin Bieber assaulted a limousine driver. The preliminary hearing will mostly deal with administrative matters. Toronto police accused Bieber of hitting a limousine driver on the back of the head several times. An official date for the trial has yet to be announced. The case is one of several legal woes the teenage star is facing, including one involving drag racing in Miami.
 
Close encounter with the red planet
Stargazers get their best chance of the year this evening to see the planet Mars. It will be at its closest point to earth - at a distance of 92 million kilometres. The planet's elliptical orbit means its distance from earth can range from 400 million to just 55 million kilometres from earth. It will shine nearly 10 times brighter than the average star, which should make it clearly visible in the night sky.
