Exit polls project that Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will secure its best result ever when the outcome of India's general election is announced today, possibly making him the first Indian leader since 1984 to rule with a majority in parliament. The BJP and its allies will win 249 to 340 seats, according to six exit polls, with 272 needed for a majority. The Congress party and its allies are projected to win 70 to 148 seats.

 

US television newswoman Barbara Walters retires from on-air work today, calling an end to a stint in broadcasting that has spanned five decades. Walters, 84, began her career in the early 1960s at NBC's . She became the first woman co-anchor of ABC's in 1976, before a quarter of a century co-hosting . Walters will remain as an executive producer of New York-based talk show , which she has hosted since 1997.
