Cairo court delivers Mubarak corruption verdict
An Egyptian court is set to issue a ruling today in the embezzlement case of former president Hosni Mubarak, his two sons and four engineers. The defendants have been accused of seizing more than 100 million Egyptian pounds (HK$108 million) that was designated for the presidential palaces. Mubarak stepped down from the presidency during the 2011 Egyptian revolution with an estimated fortune of up to US$70 billion.
 
Philippines hosts key Asian economic meeting
Manila will host the 23rd World Economic Forum on East Asia, which begins in the Philippine capital today. The three-day event will focus on the Asean Economic Community (AEC) scheduled to launch at the end of next year. The AEC will have a common market of some 600 million people with a combined GDP of nearly US$2 trillion. Almost all of the 10 Asean economies are expecting growth above 5 per cent this year.
 
John Kerry travels south for bilateral talks
US Secretary of State John Kerry will visit Mexico today to discuss a range of bilateral issues, including expanding trade and economic growth, increasing higher education collaboration, and continuing security cooperation between the two neighbours. Mexico and the United States share a long border spanning more than 3,000km. Along with Canada, the two countries are party to the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta).
 
Expatriate pay survey results revealed
Human resource consultancy ECA International will today release the results of its expatriate remuneration survey at a press conference in Central. The data focuses on whether expatriates in Hong Kong receive the same benefits and allowances as their peers in the region, how tax regimes and exchange rate movements affect assignment costs for companies, and which location in Asia is the most expensive to post staff.
 
Court set to deliver Lantau cow case verdict
A verdict is due at Tsuen Wan Court today in the case of a British engineer accused of failing to furnish police with details of a traffic offence after eight feral cows died in a hit-and-run accident on Lantau in June. Sarah Wilson pleads not guilty to failing to submit a police form reporting an accident within 21 days. Her defence counsel has told the court there is "not a shred of evidence" her car was on the road at the time of the accident.
 
Cyclists make silent call for safer roads
More than 1,000 cyclists are expected to gather in Tsim Sha Tsui this evening to join the ninth annual Hong Kong "Ride of Silence". Organisers say eight cyclists were killed and a further 2,616 injured in the city last year. The event will be held in memory of those killed and act as a call to authorities to respect cyclists as legitimate road users who deserve consideration in transport planning.
