Asia-Pacific security dialogue in Singapore
The three-day Shangri-La Dialogue involving Asia-Pacific defence ministers, military chiefs and diplomats starts in Singapore. The keynote speech will be delivered by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. There will be a strong Chinese presence headed on the diplomatic side by former deputy foreign minister Fu Ying . Academics focus on June 4's 25th anniversary
A two-day conference starts at City University to examine the implications of the suppression of the 1989 pro-democracy movement on contemporary China. Academics focus on such subjects as democracy and human rights in the country, politics and foreign policy and the development of civil society in Hong Kong. Among speakers are academics from Hong Kong, the US, Australia and Canada, as well as Hong Kong politicians.
 
Asia Society hosts discussion on city resilience
A panel discussion on how major cities can build resilience against natural disasters such as weather, health and seismic events will be hosted by the Asia Society. The focus will be on Hong Kong, London and New York. Speakers include Environment Undersecretary Christine Loh Kung-wai and Robert Lane, who was involved in discussions on how to redesign lower Manhattan following the September 11 terror attacks in New York.
 
Nato assembly considers Ukraine crisis
The situations in Ukraine and Syria are among the issues to be broached by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation at its spring parliamentary assembly in Vilnius, Lithuania. Delegates will discuss their stance on the election of a new president in Ukraine, the Russian annexation of Crimea and continuing unrest in eastern Ukraine.
 
Scottish referendum campaign starts
The official campaign for the referendum on Scottish independence begins today. The poll itself will be held on September 18. The leader of the Scottish National Party, Alex Salmond, is at the forefront of the campaign for independence, while major British parties, including both the Conservatives and Labour, oppose it. Opinion polls show that the gap between supporters and opponents has narrowed.
 
Funeral for Poland's last Communist leader
The funeral takes place for Poland's last Communist leader, General Wojciech Jaruzelski, who in 1981 controversially imposed martial law in a bid to crush the opposition Solidarity movement. He later helped with Poland's democratic transition, which brought Solidarity to power. Jaruzelski died on Sunday after suffering a stroke earlier this month.
