The three-day Shangri-La Dialogue involving Asia-Pacific defence ministers, military chiefs and diplomats starts in Singapore. The keynote speech will be delivered by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. There will be a strong Chinese presence headed on the diplomatic side by former deputy foreign minister Fu Ying . Maritime tensions are expected to figure in discussions at the event, which is organised by the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
A two-day conference starts at City University to examine the implications of the suppression of the 1989 pro-democracy movement on contemporary China. Academics focus on such subjects as democracy and human rights in the country, politics and foreign policy and the development of civil society in Hong Kong. Among speakers are academics from Hong Kong, the US, Australia and Canada, as well as Hong Kong politicians.
