Macau Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai-on was forced to make a dramatic U-turn and scrap a contentious bill handing out generous perks to retiring chief executives and ministers. This came after an unprecedented 20,000 people took part in a march against the bill on Sunday. The government then put the bill on hold, but protesters continued to call for its withdrawal. Chui finally relented on Thursday. It was the biggest protest movement since Macau's 1999 handover.
The jury in the corruption trial of former chief secretary Rafael Hui Si-yan and the Kwok brothers was dismissed after a juror complained of illness. This came just two days after the jury was empanelled. The trial was adjourned until Wednesday.
