Britain's UK Independence Party (UKIP) and France's National Front did particularly well as voters showed their unhappiness with established groups. Far-right and hard-left parties more than doubled their representation in the European parliament. UKIP leader Nigel Farage hailed "the most extraordinary result in British politics for more than 100 years".
Former military chief Abdel Fattah el-Sisi won a crushing victory in Egyptian presidential elections, easily defeating the only other candidate, leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi. Sisi's victory was never in doubt, although the voter turnout - at about 46 per cent - was lower than expected. Sisi overthrew the former president, Mohammed Mursi, last July after mass protests. He resigned from the military to run in the presidential poll.
