Xi Jinping's legal reforms top plenum agenda
The fourth plenum of the Communist Party, which opens today in Beijing, is set to focus on bolstering the rule of law. President Xi Jinping has put legal reforms at the top of his agenda as he seeks to push home his anti-corruption campaign. Analysts expect more than 350 members of the party's Central Committee to discuss setting up a new super anti-graft agency and reform of the party's political and legal affairs commission - formerly headed by detained security tsar Zhou Yongkang .
 
Nigeria likely to be declared Ebola-free
As panic over the Ebola epidemic spreads across the globe, Nigeria is today expected to be declared free of the deadly virus by the World Health Organisation after 42 days without any confirmed cases. WHO praised health officials' management of the disease in Nigeria, where it said "on a piece of world-class epidemiological detective work", all confirmed cases were traced back to a Liberian air traveller, who introduced the virus to the country in July.
 
Widodo to be sworn in as president
Joko Widodo is expected to appoint former Astra International chief Rini Soemarno as minister for state-owned enterprises after being sworn in as Indonesia's seventh president today. As SOE minister, she would oversee state-owned companies such as energy giant Pertamina and Garuda airlines. The most pressing problem for "Jokowi" will be cutting big fuel subsidies, a politically sensitive issue that could spark protests.
 
Russian investors travel to Pyongyang
A delegation of Russian investors today begin a four-day visit to North Korea in Moscow's latest move to boost business ties with its reclusive neighbour. The group, including some of Russia's leading businessmen, is being led by Minister for Far East Development Alexander Galushka. North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Su-yong recently visited Russia on a 10-day mission aimed at increasing economic cooperation and trade between the two nations.
 
Summit looks at Asean opportunities
Financial leaders will explore "new perspectives of the Asian economy" at a Hong Kong-Asean summit today. Leaders in the industrial, business and financial sectors will explore economic development trends in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations together with the opportunities of the economic partnership between Hong Kong and Asean. Gregory So Kam-leung, the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, will speak during the event at the Four Seasons Hotel.
 
Negotiators to discuss global warming pact
Climate negotiators gather in Bonn, Germany, under the UN umbrella to discuss details of a world pact to contain global warming that will be fleshed out at an annual round of talks in Lima in December ahead of its scheduled signing in Paris next year.
