Lawyers gather to protect rule of law
A group of legal professionals holds a silent gathering outside the High Court to highlight the importance of the rule of law in light of the Occupy Central movement. They are particularly worried that the rule of law has been challenged through the occupation of government land and non-compliance with recent injunctions to vacate occupied areas. The lawyers will present a statement on the issue to Justice Secretary Rimsky Yuen Kwok-keung or his representative.
 
New People's Party submits proposals
The pro-government New People's Party submits its proposals for the forthcoming policy address to Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying. It is an annual ritual for political parties to present their wish lists to the chief executive. However, this year pan-democrat parties are boycotting the event because they are angry over developments relating to political reform. Leung will present his policy address to the Legislative Council in mid-January.
 
Silk Road founder faces trial
The trial is scheduled to start in New York of Ross Ulbricht - the owner and creator of the Silk Road trading platform. Ulbricht - known as "Dread Pirate Roberts" - was arrested last year on charges of narcotics trafficking and conspiracy to traffic fraudulent identification documents. The indictment alleges trading of heroin, cocaine, LSD and methamphetamine. Ulbricht has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
 
First tenant moves into World Trade Centre
Nine years after the start of construction, One World Trade Centre in New York opens its doors to its first tenant - publisher Conde Nast. The 104-storey building is the tallest in the western hemisphere. It is built on the site of the twin towers, which were brought down in the September 11 terrorist attacks of 2001, killing 2,800 people. Conde Nast will move in its staff in phases, ending early next year.
 
Juncker takes over top job in Brussels
European Union insider Jean-Claude Juncker starts his first working day as new European Commission president. He takes over from Jose Manuel Barroso, who stepped down on Friday, along with his 28 commissioners. Juncker steps into the hot seat at a time of growing disenchantment with the European experiment. Eurosceptic parties made gains in parliamentary elections earlier this year.
 
New Year fair auctions open
The auction for stalls for 15 Hong Kong Lunar New Year fairs starts at Queen Elizabeth Stadium. Up for grabs are 1,164 wet goods stalls, 847 dry goods stalls, eight thematic counters and 17 fast food stalls. The largest fair is held in Victoria Park. The auctions are often seen as an indicator of the state of the economy. An additional factor this year might be the impact of the Occupy Central protests.
