Perhaps the biggest winner in the US midterm elections was Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, who retained his seat in Kentucky. He is now set to become the majority leader after the Republicans won more than half the Senate seats. They also extended their majority in the House of Representatives. This means that President Barack Obama is in for a tough remaining two years in office. McConnell expressed the hope that Republicans could work with the Democrat leader.

Frenchman Olivier Baillet and South African Bruce Pye were elated after completing a 75km swim around Lantau in aid of charity. They took five days to complete the circuit and ended up raising almost HK$78,000 in support of Plastic Free Seas, a charity founded to improve the state of Hong Kong's waters. They battled volatile currents, chilly waters and passing Macau ferries. The pair were accompanied by kayakers and slept on an accompanying junk. Baillet said on his return to Discovery Bay that "this is one of the happiest days of my life".
