Ma Jian One of the mainland's top spies was detained as part of President Xi Jinping's ever-widening crackdown on graft - the highest-ranking national security official to be investigated since the downfall of former security tsar Zhou Yongkang. Ma is closely linked to Ling Jihua, ex-aide of former president Hu Jintao. Ling was detained last month, also on corruption charges. Several of Ma's close relatives are also believed to be under investigation. Fast Retailing The parent company of clothes retailer Uniqlo demanded its major Chinese suppliers overhaul working conditions after they were exposed for mistreating staff. Factories owned and operated by Uniqlo's suppliers Luen Thai and Pacific Textiles were found to routinely subject workers to excessive hours, overtime, bullying and intimidation. Nancy Chu Ping The children's charity boss and World Outstanding Chinese Award recipient was handed a 12-month probation order after being convicted of abusing her adopted four-year-old son. Chu, 56, pleaded guilty to three counts of ill-treating and neglecting a child in May and June.
