An Egyptian court sentenced the ousted Islamist president Mohammed Mursi to 20 years in jail on charges linked to the killing of protesters in 2012. Mursi rose to power in elections after Hosni Mubarak was ousted in 2011.

An Egyptian court sentenced the ousted Islamist president to 20 years in jail on charges linked to the killing of protesters in 2012. Mursi rose to power in elections after Hosni Mubarak was ousted in 2011. But he was imprisoned a year later when the military overthrew the government.

 

A day after accusing academics at the University of Hong Kong of not doing their jobs properly, the Executive Council member came under a barrage of criticism. A staff association flagged up a poll in which more than four in five people urged him to quit the institution's governing body. And former law dean Professor Johannes Chan Man-mun questioned Li's understanding of the role of academics.

 

The former CIA director, whose career was ruined by an extramarital affair with his biographer, was sentenced to two years' probation and fined US$100,000 for giving her classified material. Judge David Keesler said Petraeus committed a "grave and uncharacteristic error in judgment".
