The 24-year-old Hongkonger became the first Asian to win the women's world snooker title in England. She ended the reign of 10-time champion Reanne Evans in the semi-final, then beat Emma Bonney 6-2 in the final after the English player had beaten another Hong Kong star, Jaique Ip Wan-in, in the other semi. Ng's victory puts her in an elite club that includes windsurfer Lee Lai-shan and cyclist Sarah Lee Wai-sze as Hong Kong world champions.

Guangdong's governor welcomed Hong Kong investors to set up businesses at the official launch of the province's new free-trade zone. Two other zones opened simultaneously in Tianjin and Fujian , joining the existing one in Shanghai. Zhu said the zone included more than 6,500 businesses in the 116 sq km area. "We will let the services and trade industries of Hong Kong and Macau fully perform their role in Guangdong," he said. Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying was among the guests at the opening ceremony.

She was confirmed by the US Senate as the nation's first black female attorney general and will serve as the top law enforcement official for Barack Obama's final 21 months in office. Lynch was confirmed in a 56-43 vote - with support from 10 Republicans - after weeks of gridlock. She takes over from Eric Holder, whom Republicans had branded a rubber stamp for Obama's policies.
