The chairman of German football giants Bayern Munich announced a partnership with ecommerce giant Alibaba to open an online store. "Making our fan merchandise accessible is crucial to connect with our fans in China," Rummenigge said. Bayern and Alibaba estimate the club has up 90 million followers in China. A mainland academic said business related to the sport could amount to 800 billion yuan (HK$1 billion) a year on the mainland.

The filmmaker was the toast of Taiwan after winning the best director award at the Cannes Film Festival, with President Ma Ying-jeou saying the prize had helped bolster the island's image on the world stage. The Assassin, a drama set in ninth-century China, sees a trained female killer, played by Shu Qi, sent back to her home province to kill its governor - who is also the man she loves. Ma said: "The innovation and its colourful way of telling the story has inspired a new trend in the arts of film and shone in international skies."


Tetsuko Kuroyanagi

The Japanese actress achieved a milestone as her talk show broadcast its 10,000th episode. Four years ago Tetsuko's Room was recognised by Guinness World Records in 2011 for achieving the most episodes hosted by the same presenter. Celebrities who have appeared on the show include actor Hisaya Morishige, guest on the first episode on February 2, 1976, former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher and US singer Lady Gaga.
