Students attending university should no longer be regarded as children.

They are at such an institution partly to learn to be responsible, mature adults.

However, some parents in Hong Kong continue to be overprotective even when their sons and daughters have become undergraduates.

With previous generations, parents usually let their sons or daughters be more independent once they started studying at a tertiary institution. And yet now some mothers and fathers are accompanying them on the annual information day and they often ask the questions.

There have even been press reports of them complaining to the college authorities that their child is unhappy with the noise in halls of residence ("Parents' event ridiculed for 'babying' students", September 30).

These students are supposed to be the future pillars of our society.
