Cutting down the population can ease high resource demand

Population is a global issue and we all have a responsibility to consider it.

A number of factors have an adverse effect on our planet, such as our bad consumption habits. Rapid growth of population is another factor. It is important to change these consumption habits and bring the high birth rate in some countries under control. If we continue with this over-consumption we will end up with shortages of resources.

Already, in many parts of the world, resources are already stretched to breaking point. Around 1.4 billion people live in areas where there are water shortages. Having fresh water, enough food and clean air to breathe are necessary for our survival. We need to find ways of reducing the demand we place on the earth's resources.

Take water as an example. Most people in wealthier nations do not think of water as a scarce commodity. They take long baths when they could use less water with a shower. Even in these countries, there should be water conservation measures. Also, there must be more water desalination.

Fertility control is a direct solution to the resource crunch. Cutting down the population can directly relieve high resource demand, such as the need for more food. This can effectively reduce consumption or a waste of resources.

China has enforced quotas for families to try and control its population. After the first child, couples were encouraged to allow four years between any subsequent births. Most families are limited to one child, a policy implemented in 1979.

This means there are fewer people than there would be if the one-child policy had not been adopted.

We must keep bearing this fact in mind. The world's population may keep growing, but the earth cannot get any larger. We have to ensure we protect our earth and generations to come.
