Court verdict on same-sex marriage shames Hong Kong as self-styled “world city”
The decision of the Court of Appeal to overturn a landmark decision to establish Hong Kong as a fair, tolerant and inclusive society shames our city (“Ruling a setback for Hong Kong’s image as a fair and tolerant city”, June 3).
The rest of the world is recognising same-sex marriage as a basic human right, yet Asia’s laughably self-styled “world city” fails to do so.
The appeal court justices hide conveniently behind the letter of the city’s mini-constitution, failing to take into consideration the groundswell of support for LGBT rights in our city and showing Hong Kong to be a backward culture where archaic interpretations of marriage, based on outdated religious doctrine, prevail. Are we to start stoning homosexuals next?
As a gay person, I am disgusted by this ruling and our government’s failure to recognise that equality is a basic human right to be shared by all, regardless of colour, national origin, religion, gender or sexual orientation.
