America does Taiwan no favours by egging it on to defy China
With all due respect, it is extremely unwise of the US Congress to continue egging President Tsai Ing-wen on, so that Taiwan would push back against Beijing (“US Congress set to pass hawkish bill on Taiwan”, July 27).
The 2019 defence spending bill calls for the Pentagon to strengthen Taiwan’s ability to resist any invasion from mainland China. The world knows that no country can defeat the US in a non-nuclear conflict, but the US should know that will not get away unscathed either, and at the same time will not achieve its objective of preventing the People’s Republic of China from taking over Taiwan by force. Again, in the event of a nuclear conflict, everybody will be a loser.

However, regardless of US backing for an independent Taiwan, the People’s Republic would not wish to take over the island by force. She would much prefer to win over hearts and minds in Taiwan to achieve “peaceful reunification” (“Is Taiwan warming to mainland China as Beijing turns up the heat?”, July 22). Former Kuomintang chief Lien Chan’s recent visit to the mainland was in all probability meant to carry back such a message to Tsai.
