China reveals hypocrisy in reaction to South China Sea near-collision with US warship
I was amused to read the story on your front page last Wednesday, “Chinese and US warships in near miss” (October 3), which quoted a Chinese defence ministry statement that “the Chinese vessel took quick action and made checks against the US vessel in accordance with the law”.
I seem to remember that an international tribunal at The Hague overwhelmingly rejected China’s claims to the South China Sea and said that the building of artificial islands could not be utilised as a territorial basis for exclusive economic zones.
It therefore seems hypocritical at best for China to claim that they are acting in accordance with the law. And, as regards US provocation by sailing into Chinese waters, it doesn’t get much more provocative than claiming that international waters belong to China.
