I refer to the article “Lam on the right path” (October 13).
I completely agree with David Dodwell: adjusting the tolls to divert traffic to the Western Harbour Tunnel will surely help ease the traffic congestion at the Cross-Harbour Tunnel in Causeway Bay but why wait till January 1, 2020? Surely, it shouldn’t take 15 months to introduce such a simple and effective measure.
Hong Kong should also introduce mandatory automatic tolling and provide free payment devices for all drivers for a certain period of time to drive adoption. This can be introduced in phases, firstly by ensuring that all new cars sold are equipped for automated tolling. Then, other cars should be given a period of 12 months to comply.
In Singapore, all tolls are collected electronically. Half the congestion in the Cross-Harbour Tunnel is caused by vehicles queuing up to pay the tolls – an archaic system our world-class city doesn’t deserve.
