Trump shielding the Saudis while punishing China says a lot about US commitment to human rights

Saudi Arabia
While the case of the missing or murdered journalist in the Saudi Arabian consulate in Turkey has raised eyebrows (“Trump criticises rush to judge Saudis over missing journalist”, October 17), we must not forget that many of the terrorists involved in the September 11 attacks were also from Saudi Arabia. While the US president has been focusing on bullying China over trade manipulation, the US has also been selling weapons to Saudi Arabia.
While Saudi Arabia may never reap the consequences of its actions, the world should be wary of this nation. Turkish officials have said they believe a Saudi hit team that flew into and out of Turkey on October 2 killed and dismembered Jamal Khashoggi, who had written columns critical of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Khashoggi is a Saudi citizen and a US resident.

This episode reveals the truth behind the veil of Saudi Arabia’s civility. US President Donald Trump is showing us the truth behind the United States if he doesn’t act against such injustices around the world. The missing journalist story is just the tip of the iceberg in Saudi Arabia, and the world needs to step up its action against all injustices in that region.
