How Hong Kong could land a Rugby World Cup spot: first, set up a tournament with Oceania

Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea should join Fiji, Samoa and Tonga in an Asia-Pacific Six Nations rugby tournament. The Americas have their own Six Nations (the Americas Rugby Championship), Africa has the Gold Cup and continental Europe has the Rugby Europe International Championships.

If Asia and Oceania could combine forces to set up a tournament themselves, an annual Confederations Cup-type tournament involving the four winners of the respective tournaments might become a possibility.

The Rugby World Cup has mooted the idea of expanding its tournament to 24 teams in the next decade, which will bring Hong Kong and South Korea into contention. Regular match practice against the Pacific Islanders would help prepare them for such an opportunity.
