Tung Chung chaos: Hong Kong officials clearly didn’t think things through on mega-bridge impact
- Clearly no one in authority anticipated such an inflow of tourists
Thank you for the insights on the Tung Chung mainland tourist influx issue (“Quick fix needed for visitor chaos at Tung Chung” November 11). It has been clear from day one that the Hong Kong government underestimated the demand for taking the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge to Tung Chung.
Had it not been for the local groups there noticing the huge potential demand of that route and lobbying to use franchised buses, the result could have been far worse overcrowding, without enough “golden” feeder buses to clear the tourists in time before the next busload arrived.
The last few weekends have seen a surge in mainland tourists arriving for a Tung Chung day tour. Where are the onward transport and accommodations to cater for them? Where are the people to intercept the illegal tour groups that should not have even been allowed to cross the border? Clearly no one in authority anticipated such an inflow of tourists. Certainly not the Transport Department nor Hong Kong Customs.
Tung Chung residents are clearly upset, as are Hong Kong independence activists who are already taking the opportunity to launch irrational actions, further exacerbating the Hong Kong versus China conflict. The government cannot delay in finding a solution.
