Letters | Lonely Christmas on the cards after airline fails to deliver on tickets

    Aviation

My wife and child were flying out of Manila to Hong Kong on Philippine Airlines at the end of the Lunar New Year, when staff started to request people to give up their seats due to over-booking, in exchange for free return flights from Hong Kong to Manila.

After repeated requests, my wife agreed to relinquish their seats, provided the replacement return flights could be used at Christmas. She was assured that she could do so.

Later she was informed in Hong Kong that she could only book replacement tickets in the Philippines and not by phone from Hong Kong as previously stated. As we frequently fly to the Philippines, on October 13, she went to the Philippine Airlines office in Manila and was told she had to pay all the taxes – 8,048 pesos (US$153) – for the two tickets.

Having paid these surprise charges, she was informed that the flights were booked and that confirmation would be sent by email. After four weeks of no contact she rang, to be told that her flights were not confirmed.

We are now told that no flights are confirmed during her holiday dates. In the meantime, I have booked my holiday in the Philippines. Thanks to Philippine Airlines’ incompetence, I will probably be holidaying alone.
