Letters | Abuse of Hong Kong emergency services cannot be forgiven
I am writing in response to the article, “Broken fingernails and lift-catchers: ambulance service abuse could cost lives”, November 24. The article reported how Hong Kong’s busy ambulance services are abused by some people seeking a free ride or even to avoid queuing for a bus. It is easily imaginable how such abuse of emergency services can prove costly to patients in genuine need. And there are no penalties for such deplorable behaviour.
The article left me very disappointed with the attitude of Hongkongers who think nothing of abusing the service. If people can call an ambulance for ridiculous reasons like a broken fingernail, it is clear that the government should set up a law to punish such abusers, as this is really selfish behaviour. Fines and even jail time should be mandated so that this does not happen and selfish people don’t cost lives.
