There is talk these days of the US obsession with Hong Kong, that rather than minding its own business, the US continues to meddle in Hong Kong affairs . However, notable too is the obsession that some Hong Kong institutions have with the United States. An example is the daily evening English news on TVB Pearl. The news is preceded by a clip, “Today in History”. I have observed that most events highlighted in this section include politicians, musicians, actors, scientists, sportsmen and other personalities from the US, only a few from the rest of the Western world, and none whatsoever from China or the rest of Asia. If children were to go by this section, then nothing of much significance ever took place in over 2,500 years of well-documented Chinese and Asian history. And after this section comes the main news, which very often is blank on mainland China, has an occasional reference to happenings in Asia, and then several minutes of US news, with often repetitive video clips from US cities. The news ends with the female newsreader comically prodding her male colleague into reeling out the major Western sporting events of the day, as if feminine gender is incompatible with the reading of sports news. Could TVB Pearl please explain this content? Is it under the impression that the English news caters only to a Western audience? Or is it simply an unintended innocent aberration? I am sure that there is a sizeable local population who likes news in English, and who would welcome more balanced coverage. Sutinder Bindra, Discovery Bay
