Letters | Enough of the hate, time for Hong Kong to unite on road to healing

This year, Hong Kong’s political landscape has undergone a paradigm shift, with issues ranging from the imposition of national security legislation to the mass disqualification of pro-democracy activists from Legislative Council elections, followed by the high-profile arrest of Jimmy Lai Chee-ying and the vetting of liberal studies textbooks.
Bitter bickering, finger-pointing and malicious doxxing have fuelled scepticism, distrust and hatred. Negative ideas have dominated our minds and overshadowed countless encouraging and inspiring stories.

We need to detach ourselves from fake news and conspiracy theories, and shake off the frustration by paying attention to the bright and energetic side of our society.

Instead of targeting the government’s incompetence, why not amplify the heartwarming acts of citizens from all walks of life? We are proud to have dedicated medical workers, committed teachers, devoted emergency personnel, blue-collar workers, street cleaners and other unsung heroes. With their blood, sweat and tears, our embattled city has managed to weather one storm after another.

Whatever the challenges ahead, nothing could sway our love and unity, nothing could shatter our core values. Yes, we can heal this city. Yes, we can seize our future. However dark the moment, a beacon of light always awaits us.

Let faith brighten our path and empower us to carry on. From now on, let’s take part in the “love trumps hate” campaign, to spread kindness and love to those struggling with all the hardships the recent months have brought. Only in this way can the city triumph over the hurtful rumours and resentment.
