I am writing with reference to “ City to get first batch of vaccines next month ” (December 12) and calls from readers for greater clarity or choice on the source and brand of vaccines to be administered in the city. Since the successive waves of Covid-19 have lasted for nearly a year now, many people in Hong Kong are displaying pandemic fatigue . No sooner were the government’s disease prevention measures loosened a bit than the fourth wave of the pandemic arrived. A vaccine seems to be the last hope for Hong Kong and the world to decisively beat the coronavirus, get the pandemic under control and return our lives to normal. Undoubtedly, those in high-risk groups should get a vaccination as a first priority. Also, it is fair to not offer a choice on the brand of vaccine people will receive. This can help authorities to implement a speedy, well-organised vaccine injection programme throughout the city. However, there are concerns within society that patient rights could be violated. I strongly believe that even laypersons have the right to be fully informed and understand all the possible side effects, and the expected protection offered by different vaccines, before getting inoculated. Was Hong Kong’s pick of three Covid-19 vaccines over 10 others the right call? The government should disclose the relevant information to citizens, especially on the Sinovac vaccine, so as to gain the trust of the public and give them the confidence to get vaccinated (“ Carrie Lam blasts ‘malicious’ rumours over mainland Chinese vaccine ”, December 15). It is my fervent hope that the pandemic can be beaten as soon as possible, so businesses and livelihoods in Hong Kong can get back to normal in the foreseeable future. Hailey Au, Shek Lei
