As a former chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, I agree with the views expressed in your editorial of May 20 on the subject of the recent survey (“ AmCham survey does not reflect true picture of Hong Kong ”). I was among the 58 per cent that expressed a positive view on the future of Hong Kong on this four-question survey. The issue is much more complex than a simple “going or staying” question. Furthermore, not all members of AmCham are American companies, so these results should not be interpreted as solely the view of American businesses in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, a simple survey such as this with only a tiny sampling of companies gets picked up by the international media and sends a distorted message to the world about the future business confidence of American companies or – by extension – all international companies in Hong Kong. Any serious international business would clearly see that the opportunities for growth in this century are here in Asia. That being the case, where would companies go if they were to move from here? What other Asian location offers more advantages than Hong Kong? More choice, more space for expats as Hong Kong rents slide amid Covid-19 My own company has been operating here for more than 50 years, and we have offices across Asia. We have not found any city that offers a better environment for business than Hong Kong. Bordering mainland China just makes the future here even more exciting. Finally, my company is a leader in the international moving and relocation of families to and from Hong Kong. While there has always been active moving of expatriates in and out of Hong Kong, we have seen no exodus of families departing Hong Kong other than a normal turnover over the past two years. I firmly believe, based on past experience, that continued stability and the end of the Covid-19 pandemic will see more international businesses coming to Hong Kong. Jim Thompson, Wan Chai
