This Covid-19 pandemic can be overcome through vaccination. This is what medical researchers hope. Despite very few reports of fatalities following vaccination, which authorities stress do not represent proof that the death was caused by the vaccine, fears related to death and the possibility of undesirable side effects mean many don’t dare get vaccinated. The Hong Kong government has gone all out to push the vaccination campaign and in support, the private sector has introduced lucky draws offering huge prizes and other incentives to Hong Kong residents who are fully vaccinated. Many organisations have come forward and their offers are publicised in the city’s newspapers and social media platforms. I received a set of links to register online for the lucky draws of various organisations. I registered for those that I was interested in. All the registration forms came with standard agreements. In some cases, when I clicked on some links, advertisements popped up. Then doubts arose. While registering we need to provide our ID number, phone number and name for some lotteries. Are we not revealing too much personal information about us to those organisations? Don’t take chances with data privacy in Covid jab lotteries If my data is sold by any of these organisations, how can I trace which one did so? Is this not a data privacy hazard? We are lured with prizes and the organisation can get our details, which can be used for their future promotions. Is this not the purpose? Dr Chitra Sivakumar, Tung Chung
