The battle to save Hong Kong from the deadly Wuhan coronavirus requires a sense of urgency, decisive action and a willingness to take bold steps.

New measures announced by Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor this week are welcome. But more needs to be done to protect the city amid the alarming spread of the virus on the mainland, where more than 6,000 cases have been confirmed and more than 130 people have died.

The latest steps will reduce cross-border travel, as confirmed cases in Hong Kong rose to 10. Visas for individual travellers visiting Hong Kong are suspended and two cross-border train services halted. Flights to and from the mainland will be halved and six border checkpoints closed. These measures are necessary and should have been introduced sooner.

There are also doubts about whether these steps are sufficient. The busiest border checkpoints remain open. Mainland business travellers and those visiting family members are still allowed to enter the city, and most cross-border trips are made by Hong Kong people.

More effort must be made to track down those who have come from or visited areas affected on the mainland. Help is also needed for at least 200 Hong Kong people trapped in Wuhan, the worst-hit city, which has been locked down for a week.
