Donald Trump is about to start an unprecedented post-presidential career. The loyalty of the Republican base and Trump’s continued refusal to follow presidential norms all suggest he will remain a political force after Joe Biden is sworn in as president on January 20.
Traditionally, US presidents have sought to remove themselves from politics to allow their successor space to govern, but with the establishment of the “Save America” political action committee and suggestions he may run in 2024, Trump is signalling his intention to remain involved in politics after his time in office.
As Brad Parscale, Trump’s initial campaign manager this cycle, has pointed out, “It isn’t like his Twitter account or his ability to control a news cycle will stop.”

Even if he decides against running in 2024, Republicans seeking to be his successor will want to be seen as in line with Trump’s views. This unprecedented dynamic may cast a shadow over US foreign policy.
