My Take | What American values?

  • The US likes to claim it is the world’s greatest democracy and engine of wealth – gospels which must be spread around the world. Current news headlines say otherwise

Three news stories have caught my eye recently because they seem to say a lot about American culture and values. They show why the world is much better off for NOT following the example of the United States, and indeed suicidal if we were to do so.

An 11-year-old boy died from hypothermia when his family lost electricity and heat in their mobile home during the devastating cold snap in Texas.

Three people were killed and two injured in a shooting following a dispute at a gun store in Louisiana.

February is Black History Month in the United States.

Below the surface, they reflect respectively the dangers of market fundamentalism inspired by deregulation and neoliberal economics; the falsehood of equating gun ownership with liberty; and the ambiguity of remembrance and learning.
