Editorial | John Lee must have more detailed platform as he reaches out to Hong Kong

  • Former police officer turned minister has promised ‘result-oriented’ leadership in his push to become chief executive, but the public deserves to know more

John Lee Ka-chiu has immediately embarked on a busy campaign trail after announcing his bid over the weekend to become Hong Kong’s next leader. This is part and parcel of the process to become chief executive, even though the outcome is widely seen as predetermined by Beijing.

It is important that Lee continues to reach out to the Election Committee and the wider community, and produce a more detailed platform in line with public aspirations and Hong Kong’s needs.

The three focuses outlined by the former government No 2 in his online press conference – to achieve goals, boost competitiveness and reinforce the city’s foundations – have been well received by the pro-establishment camp. This is unsurprising.

While they may not have been explicitly promoted by previous administrations as a guiding philosophy, they are fundamental to governance. In any case, they are just broad directions.

They need to be followed by more specific campaign promises to be delivered in the new five-year term.
