My TakeUK and US spy chiefs on an anti-China PR ‘blitzkrieg’

  • The heads of MI5, MI6, the FBI and CIA have been working jointly to oversell ‘the China threat’. Is it a public announcement service or is there a hidden agenda?

Spies trade in information but work in dissimulation. So if spymasters offer you information for free by calling press conferences, you might want to ask yourself, what’s going on and why are they doing it? That’s especially if they are all doing it at the same time and giving variants of the same message.

That’s what one public relations guru I once met described as “information blitzkrieg”, whereby you so overwhelm your target audience with message overload that their critical faculty breaks down.

Perhaps that’s what the mainstream Western media have been hit with, as most outlets happily reported the wisdom of the spymasters raining down on them without providing any analysis or even some context. I find a press release posted on the British MI5’s website more streamlined and to the point than most news reports.

Doesn’t it strike you as odd that the heads of MI5, MI6, the FBI and CIA are suddenly so camera-friendly? Speaking at the Aspen Security Forum, CIA director William Burns warned China’s invasion of Taiwan was now a question of when and how, not if.

Also at the same forum, his British counterpart and head of MI6, Richard Moore, said “Xi [Jinping] was watching this like a hawk”, referring to the war in Ukraine, because the president wanted to execute a better and improved invasion of Taiwan.
