When the war in Ukraine began, many expected a quick and decisive outcome. But as the first anniversary of the conflict is marked on Friday, there is no end in sight.

Positions have become increasingly entrenched. A fresh Russian offensive and counter-attacks by Ukraine are expected.

There are disturbing signs of escalation, with the potential for the war to spiral into a global conflagration. This is a time for restraint, dialogue and renewed efforts to bring peace.
