Editorial | True Hong Kong experience can attract tourists
- Survey of 30,000 local people has come up with some inside information on city sights, sounds and tastes visitors will find invaluable
There is perhaps no better way for travellers to experience a new place than do what the locals do.
While the internet is awash with recommendations and reviews for top attractions and hidden gems, nothing beats a list of favourites put together by the people who really know.
The top 20 picks for an authentic Hong Kong experience following a survey of 30,000 local people by the Tourism Board range from a trip to the idyllic Tai O fishing village to a hearty bowl of shrimp dumpling noodles.
Others include hiking up to the Thousand Islands Lake in Tuen Mun, checking out dynamic city life at different wet markets and streets full of aquariums and goldfish in Mong Kok, and renting a bicycle for a leisurely ride in the New Territories.
Some of these itineraries remain off the radar of mainstream tourists. But increasingly, more visitors are discovering these hotspots and delicacies, and sharing their experiences on social media.
